Adulthood is not readily assigned on your 18th or 21st birthday. Most experts agree that adulthood is gained by significant life accomplishments, This doesn't include running away from home as a teenager.

Neither does it mean having a job flipping hamburgers, although both of these events are significant. The road to adulthood is vast, hilly and scary. It is a wild adventure. It may be a more stoic, rigid affair depending on your situation. Depending on the income bracket of your parents. Depending on the dysfunction level of your family. Depending if you live in the city, on a farm, in the suburbs. What did your school system provide?

The truth is we all make our own decisions. This is a sign of growing up. Deciding what outfit you will wear to school, what color socks you prefer will eventually lead up to the Who am I, What Do I Want to Do and Who Do I Want to Do It With questions.

Number 1: The ultimate sign of adulthood is that you are willing and able to suffer the results of any decision you make, good or bad. Problem solving is a huge component of life, the 24-7 that everyone has to deal with. It's a very good thing we start small with sock decisions and move slowly up to who do I want to live with, why am I here and where am I going?

Making bigger decisions, such as where to live, where to work and what will I do for transportation and insurance may come long after our 21st birthday. Covid has put the human family in a unique place where we have learned the value of family and the incredible support it brings.

One can see how education and family play a huge role in what kind of adult we become. But, certainly by the time we are twenty somethings, we have an idea of who we are and where we are going.

Number 2: The experts say, and I agree, the ability to buy your first home - even rent your first apartment. Being able to cover the cost of living is a hugely adult matter. Isn't that scary? It is scary and exciting and liberating! Do you see how it's not the job, your career or how much you make? Rather it's what you do with your assets. Remember, your character is as valuable as your income. Together they constitute adulthood.

Number 3: The third requirement or expectation of responsible adulthood is to appreciate that the human population of nearly eight billion, is family. Neighborhood and community are important. Being friendly, courteous and helpful go a very long way in making earth a happy place.

That doesn't sound too difficult, does it? Twenty to Twenty-five years of training and we are off and running! Slips, trips and falls happen to everyone; we can get back up by our own virtual strength, with the help of friends and family or intervention from on high. May God Bless You Always.
